Toluca International Airport (TLC) to San Miguel de Allende by Bus

About 4.5 hours total Airport to Antigua Capilla Bed and Breakfast.

More and more airlines such as Mexicana, Aeromexico, Continental and most recently Volaris have been adding routes from the States and other parts of Mexico to the Toluca International Airport (TLC.) The Leon Airport (BJX) is the closest airport to San Miguel de Allende, but if you see a cheap fare to Toluca you might want to consider it.

Toluca is the capital of the Mexican state of Mexico. The newly reconstructed airport is located 45 minutes west of Mexico City and 4.5 hours south of San Miguel de Allende. Here’s how to get from the Toluca Airport to Antigua Capilla Bed and Breakfast.

Once you clear customs, head to the taxi kiosks inside the terminal and purchase a voucher for a ride to the Toluca Central de Autobuses bus station for $130 Pesos (2009 price.) If you need cash you can get it at one of the many ATM’s near the exit doors. Walk outside and hop into your designated taxi. The ride takes 15 to 25 minutes depending on the time of day.

At the Toluca bus terminal, look for the Primera Plus counter and purchase a ticket to Queretaro for $160 Pesos (2009 price.) Busses depart once an hour all day long, and the ride takes about three hours. The busses are very comfortable. The seats recline, movies are shown (dubbed in Spanish) and a light snack is served. Our favorite seats are in the front row. There’s plenty of legroom, and we can work on our laptops without being bumped by a reclining seat.

Primera Plus Bus at the Queretaro Bus Terminal

From the Queretaro bus terminal, you have two options. You can either take a bus to San Miguel de Allende for about $80 Pesos or you can hop on a taxi for $390 Pesos. If you choose the bus, look for the Flecha Amarilla counter, and purchase your ticket there. The ride will take about 2 hours, as the bus meanders through several villages on the way to San Miguel.

If you chose to take a taxi, purchase your voucher at the taxi stand inside the terminal. Be sure the driver has a spare tire and the appropriate tools needed to change a tire before getting in. The taxi ride will take about 45 minutes. That's it. You've made it to Antigua Capilla Bed and Breakfast!

“Official” San Miguel de Allende Taxi Rates

The husband of one of our staff members is a taxi driver, and he recently enlightened us with some very useful taxi fare information. We realize that fares in San Miguel are negotiable, but we were surprised with some of what he told us. Prior to our conversation, we routinely were agreeing to pay higher fares in some cases. Perhaps some of our local readers will be surprised as well.

The daytime trips around town are pretty standard, but once the sun goes down or for trips to the outskirts of town, the fares become highly negotiable. The drivers will always try to get what they can, and the less knowledgeable you are, the more you’ll pay. Here’s the lowdown:

  • Around town: 25 Pesos all day, 30 Pesos after 10PM (Many drivers will attempt to collect 30 Pesos all day long.)
  • Bus Terminal to Centro: 30 to 35 Pesos if you walk to the sidewalk and hail a taxi (the taxi drivers parked at the terminal pay to park there and will typically ask for 40 Pesos but have been known to charge 100 Pesos or more.)
  • Calls for Pickup: 25 Pesos for the call plus the cost of your ride, 30 Pesos for the call after 10PM plus the cost of your ride.
  • Multiple stops: 25 Pesos per stop in the day, 30 Pesos per stop after 10PM.
  • Wait time: 150 Pesos per hour (or a fraction thereof. This is where your negotiating skills need to kick in.)

Antigua Capilla Bed and Breakfast Joins the Recycling Community of San Miguel de Allende

In an effort to divert as much of our waste as possible from the local landfill and help make San Miguel de Allende a more sustainable place, Antigua Capilla Bed and Breakfast has signed up with Reciqla, a local recycling company.

For 36 pesos (that's less than $3!) a month, Reciqla comes to our door once a week to pick up our presorted recyclables. Not all neighborhoods are covered in their routes, but as demand grows, so will their coverage.

Believe it or not, this service did not exist in San Miguel de Allende prior to 2009. Needless to say that when we arrived from San Francisco, CA, where recycling had been second nature to us for years, throwing a plastic bottle in the trash seemed incredibly sacrilegious. We had recycling withdrawals! Now with the Reciqla curb-side service, we can resume doing what we took for granted in the States.

Help us make San Miguel de Allende a more sustainable community. Whether you choose to stay at Antigua Capilla Bed and Breakfast or at another B&B or hotel in San Miguel, we ask that you support the businesses that recycle.

For more information about Reciqla visit their website at www.reciqla.com.
