Archeological site of Cañada de la Virgen

We recently visited the newly opened archeological site of Cañada de la Virgen located approximately 20 miles from San Miguel de Allende. We spent the morning exploring the ruins with Albert Coffee, an archeologist and tour guide that has been directly involved with the excavation of the site for several years.

If you choose to visit the park, you must know that you will need to park at the entrance and take a shuttle with a guide to a spot located about 1km from the ruins. From there, you will walk the rest of the way.

Here are some pictures that we took of the site.

Mexican Independence in San Miguel de Allende

Lucy Nuñez, in her first term as mayor of San Miguel de Allende gave the traditional cry for independence "el grito" this year from the second story balcony of the historical home of Ignacio Allende, one of Mexico's heroes of the independence movement 200 years ago. This year, 2010, marks the first time a woman has ever done it. It's too bad the microphone was so low.

Watch the video all the way through to see the fireworks immediately following the Grito.

Nuestro Señor de la Columna arrives in San Miguel de Allende

Once a year for nearly 200 years, the faithful have gathered at the shrine of Atotoniclo at midnight two Sundays before Easter. They remove images of Nuestro Señor de la Columna, Saint John and Mary and place them on platforms to be carried approximately 7 miles to the San Juan de Dios Church in San Miguel de Allende. Nuestro Señor de la Columna is a life-size image of a bleeding Christ leaning heavily on a column. His ribs are exposed from flogging and his cheek bears the scar of the Judas kiss.

The fireworks that awoke us at 5 o’clock on the morning of Sunday March 21, 2010 signaled another arrival of Nuestro Señor de la Columna.

This year, instead of ignoring the fireworks, we decided to get up and head to Avenida Independencia to welcome the three images as they arrived from their night-long journey.

We made it to the avenue at 7 AM just in time to see the chamomile flowers and sawdust carpets that covered the road for several blocks.

A few minutes later, the three images could be seen arriving in the distance.

The avenue filled with thousands of people as they followed the images to the San Juan de Dios Church.

Shopping Local in San Miguel de Allende

Images of the "Tianguis," San Miguel de Allende's Tuesday Market

San Miguel de Allende has a great outdoor market every Tuesday known locally as “el Tianguis.” Like so many markets throughout the world, this is where you experience the true essence of the local culture.

You’ll find everything at the Tianguis from fresh locally grown fruits and vegetables to all of the staples of Mexican cuisine to appliances, house wares, clothes, etc. Come explore this place and take it all in. If you’re hungry, stop by one of the many food vendors and try something local, like a huarache, a sandal shaped flat bread made from corn dough and topped with your choice of Mexican goodness. Think "Mexican pizza".

The “Tuesday Market”, as local expats call it, is less than a mile away from our bed and breakfast in San Miguel de Allende. Walk or take a taxi...or come with us! We're there every week.
